Finding the Right Therapist: What I Wish Someone Told Me Before My First Session

Deciding to seek professional therapy is an act of fierce self-love. But let’s be honest: actually navigating the mental health healthcare system can feel daunting, confusing, and emotionally exhausting.

Insurance directories with disconnected phone numbers, therapists with six-month waiting lists, and the awkward vulnerability of spilling your life story to a stranger on Zoom — it’s a lot. Here are the practical truths I learned from my own therapy journey.

1. The “Therapeutic Alliance” Matters More Than The Modality

While techniques like CBT, DBT, Somatic Experiencing, or EMDR are powerful tools, clinical research consistently shows that the single greatest predictor of successful therapy is the relationship between you and your therapist. If you don’t feel emotionally safe, seen, and respected by them, the techniques won’t matter.

2. It Is 100% Acceptable to “Interview” Them

Most licensed therapists offer a free 15-minute consultation call. Treat this like an interview! Questions you can ask:

  • “How do you approach working with clients dealing with anxiety/people-pleasing/cultural trauma?”
  • “What is your style: are you more of an active conversationalist or a quiet listener?”
  • “What experience do you have with clients from my cultural, religious, or queer background?”

3. You Are Allowed to “Break Up” With a Therapist

If you have had three sessions and something feels off, you do not owe them your loyalty. Therapists are professionals; they will not be offended if you send a brief message: “Thank you for our sessions so far, but I’ve decided to look for a provider whose approach aligns more closely with my current goals.”
